When Titikaveka College held their Maori speech competition last month, they received an excellent response from the students.

Mauri Toa from the Cook Islands Christian Church, Rutera Taripo from the culture ministry, Jane Taurarii from the education ministry and ex-teacher Tapurau Short were handed the task of judging the 33 students’ speeches. The pupils were from Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11.

They presented their speeches in front of their peers based on the school’s theme for the term which was “Healthy Living”.

Parents also turned out in good numbers to support their children

“It was good to see so many participating students and for some it was the first time for some of them,” said principal Gayle Lockington.

Each participant received a certificate and prizes from sponsors. Here are some more of the speeches.
