The four-masted sailing ship Wind Spirit made its first ever port call to Rarotonga yesterday.

The motor sailing yacht, sailing as a cruise ship, managed to disembark passengers at the Arorangi jetty after failing to berth at the Avatiu harbour due to rough seas.

Metua Vaiimene, Cook Islands Tourism director of destination development, said this was the vessel’s first visit to the Cook Islands.

Vaiimene said this was also the first cruise ship to operate at Arorangi in the last two years.

He said roughly 200 passengers disembarked and enjoyed tours on the island.

According to an advisory by the cruise liner, no one on board the ship travelled from or through China, Hong Kong and Macau 30 days prior to leaving for this cruise.

Also prior to boarding the vessel, all passengers and crew underwent a no-touch thermal scan to screen for fever.

The cruise liner also confirmed that they were not sailing to any countries with reported cases.
