Water tank subsidy co-ordinator appointed

Monday May 20, 2013 Written by Published in Economy

The co-ordinator of the government’s water tank subsidy has been appointed.

Peter Taivairanga was formerly project officer for the Development Co-ordination Division of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Management (MFEM). He will now be responsible for managing the subsidy, which aims to increase Rarotonga’s water storage capacity.

George Turia, who has been overseeing the project prior to Taivairanga’s appointment, said more than 300 property owners have already filled out applications for the subsidy.

Each application for the $1500 subsidy will be followed up and assessed by the co-ordinator as well as technical staff from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Planning. Those who do not already have a water tank and those households in ‘priority areas’ typically subject to low water pressure will be given priority.

Application forms are currently available from the Development Co-ordination Division office at MFEM, upstairs on the second floor of the government building opposite the Banana Court.

Electronic copies of the form are also available on request by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or phoning 29521.

Each application form will be entered on to a master register, which will then be assessed by the co-ordinator for eligibility.

The limited funds available will mean that not everyone will receive the subsidy.

The programme will last three years and it is estimated up to 2000 tanks are likely to be approved and installed as part of the scheme.

The subsidy will be paid to the supplier of the water tanks on completion of installation.
