Changing the name of “Kuki Airani” to a traditional tupuna Maori name is back on the agenda of the Ui Ariki this week.

Tou Ariki said the Are Ariki and Te Kopapa Reo Maori supported the name change and had made a submission to Parliament for their support, before putting it out to the public.

Minister of Culture George Angene said he supported a name change from Kuki Airani – but only if that was what the people of the country wanted.

Just returned from New Zealand after a stint in hospital, Angene can’t wait to get back into action and will soon meet with the Aronga Mana.

He suggests: “Take it back to the people to decide if they want the name Kuku Airani changed, before submitting to Parliament.”

The proposition is for a tupuna Maori title for Kuki Airani; the English name Cook Islands would remains as it is.   - ME

In association with the Ui Ariki, the Cook Islands News is inviting recommendations for a Maori name.

There are more important things to do than changing
The name of Kuki Airani. The people of our country is more important than a name change. Nothing will change by changing the name. Not sure why you guys want to change the name there's nothing wrong with it. LOOK AT THE PEOPLE 1ST

Even if the name changes the Cook Islands will always be known to 'most' foreigners as 'Rarotonga' being the gateway city of the Cook Islands.

For example: Its hard to say where i am from cause when i say im a 'Cook Islander' other people say 'Rarotonga' and i say no thats one of the islands.

Why spend so much time and money on a topic that's not going to bring our People to a better Living Standard eg; .....Outer Islands; I bet you there way of living is still way behind so why not put the money there for a better use? A new Traditional Maori name will never change of how we live our lives but helping our People by bringing more Jobs etc!!! will change our Lifestyle. God Bless!!!
