The officers were out fighting the blaze in Betela, Arorangi, last week, when their air compressor was taken. At the same time, drunken bystanders were hurling abuse at them as they tried to save the house.
Worst of all, at one point a bystander was pulling at the hoses of firefighters who were inside the burning house.
“It was a crazy night and sad that there are people who don’t appreciate the hard work all of the different brigades do,” said one of the firefighters, Fletcher Melvin.
Fire chief Barry Hill said they were out late fighting the fire, so they know the burglary happened after 11pm on Thursday night. They found the compressor was missing on Friday morning.
The compressor is used in fire truck repairs and tyre maintenance, so they can race out at short notice.
The culprits had probably tried to get to the BSP ATM money machine located at the fire station but failed, Hill said. BSP is checking its security cameras.
If anyone knows of anyone acquiring an air compressor, Hill is pleading for information.
