Smash driver ‘known to police’

Government MP Albert Nicholas escaped serious injury when the rental car he was in smashed into a power pole on Nikao main road.

Nicholas was the passenger. Police say the driver is known to them, and was a disqualified driver.

The silver Toyota, travelling at speed, flattened the pole and continued across the road and 10 metres into the neighbouring paddock.

It was one of two collisions within five minutes of each other in Nikao. In the second crash, a motorbike drove into the rear of a car, smashing the rear window. The driver sustained a cut and required hospital treatment, police said.

No injuries were reported in the car v power pole incident, which occurred on the town side of the seawall.
