Man faces 13 charges

A man facing 13 separate charges appeared at the Cook Islands High Court on Thursday.

Okotai Rongo appeared before Justice of Peace John Whitta and entered guilty pleas to six counts of contempt of court, one count of being intoxicated in a public place, excess breath alcohol and dangerous driving.

Defence counsel Wilkie Rasmussen said his client wanted to deal with the nine court matters before considering pleas on the theft, burglary and assault on a female charge.

JP Whitta said sentencing would be on hold until the defendant enters pleas on the remaining charges.

He adjourned the matter to June 6 and remanded Rongo in custody.

In another custody matter, Tuainekore Kare appeared on a charge of assault on a female.

JP Whitta said the defendant had a worrying report from Dr Fariu from the Ministry of Health.

JP Whitta asked defence counsel Rasmussen if he could look into the matter as Kare had no legal representation.

Rasmussen said he would look into the matter for the meantime and it would be better for the defendant not to be released at this stage because of the risk he posed to the public.

JP Whitta said the defendants psychiatric issue involved safety of the family.

“Prosecution made submission on the concern that if he remains in custody he maintains his medications. He has not been entirely cooperative, has drinking issues and doesn’t take medications on time when released. Release from custody is not feasible.”

The matter has been adjourned to June 6.
