Katoa appeared before Justice of Peace John Whitta at the Cook Islands High Court last Thursday.
He was charged on one count of common assault.
The court heard that last year at the Punanga Nui Market, Katoa was drinking with the victim.
They got into an argument and the victim is said to have received some injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Whitta said the victim has some psychiatric issues which are ongoing.
He said Katoa’s last offence was 23 years ago in 1995 and has been heavily involved in youth and sports so this offence was unfortunate.
Whitta said given the age of the victim he considered starting with a prison sentence, however, since the defendant last appeared in court more than two decades ago and has been heavily involved with work in his community it would not be appropriate.
Whitta said the incident was resolved between Katoa and the victim.
“You are convicted and sentenced to 18-months’ probation, spending the first six-months on community service, not to leave Rarotonga without the permission of the High Court and $150 for medical reparation for the victim and $50 court costs,” Whitta said.
Katoa represented himself in court.
