The blaze that destroyed a building in Arorangi on Sunday evening spread so fast that firefighters were unable to do anything about it.

The fire broke out at around 4.50pm and was attended by six fire trucks from the Rescue Fire, Puaikura and Teimurimotia volunteer fire services.

Chief fire officer Willy Hagai said the blaze quickly spread through the structure – believed to be a workshop.

“When the firefighters got to the scene, the fire was at one part of the building and by the time they could get their equipment out, it quickly spread to the rest of the building.

“The wind didn’t help as it aided the fire.”

Hagai said the fire officers along with the police officers were at the site yesterday carrying out investigation on the cause of the blaze. “We believe the building is not insured and investigations on what caused the fire are still underway.

The fire is the second in a week after a corrugated iron Arorangi house was  destroyed on Thursday. Unsupervised children playing with matchsticks have been blamed
