Police detectives have arrested a 17-year-old male in connection with burglaries that occurred at two major Avarua businesses in the early hours of last Thursday.

The arrest came on Friday morning after police searched for the suspected offender throughout the night.

The young man appeared in court on Saturday and was remanded in custody until August 23. Police say further charges are anticipated.

A police statement also said that a team would be continuing to work this case and others, “as they pursue those who are responsible for the spate of recent burglaries and other crimes on Rarotonga”.

Following this latest arrest, Police Commissioner Maara Tetava extended his gratitude to those members of the community who have been forthcoming with information about the recent incidents of burglary.

“Our teams were greatly assisted by the businesses concerned and members of the community with the recent arrests and we are encouraged by these results,” Tetava said.

“We would like this spirit of co-operation and partnership to continue, to keep our community safe.

“We are determined to apprehend those committing these crimes but we cannot do it alone. We need the help of the community, so if you know who these people are, let us know.”

A police spokesperson said they would also like to urge parents and caregivers to look after their young ones and be aware of where they are, who they are associating with and what they are doing.
