A 46-year-old man charged with manslaughter on the island of Aitutaki is scheduled to appear in the Cook Islands High Court in Avarua today.

The man appeared in the Aitutaki High Court last Thursday afternoon, in relation to the death of a nine-year-old boy.

The boy passed away at Aitutaki Hospital on Saturday night and his body was flown to Rarotonga the following day.

A team of four officers from the Cook Islands police service, led by Detective Inspector Areumu Ingaua, is investigating the case on Aitutaki.

A police spokesperson told CINews a forensic pathologist was still carrying out a post-mortem examination, attempting to identify the official cause of the death.

“…there is obviously a high degree of public interest around this case” said the police spokesperson.

“The public is expressly asked to exercise sensitivity and respect for the victim’s family and the necessary work being undertaken by the police and medical authorities, as part of the legal process.”

Under section 197 of the Crimes Act, a person convicted of manslaughter can be sentenced to life imprisonment.
