According to police, the officer driving the police vehicle has been suspended pending a series of investigations into the death of 16-year-old Pukana Piniata.
Police spotted Piniata driving a motorcycle at high speed in Avarua and began their pursuit which ended in the fatal crash at the O’oa Bridge in Upper Tupapa.
The Cook Islands Police Service is aware of allegations that police actions during the pursuit may have contributed to the crash.
Several investigations are ongoing in regards to the incident and police say they must be allowed to run their course.
As of yesterday Police Commissioner Maara Tetava had yet to notify the Ombudsman of the incident and a spokesperson for the Office of the Ombudsman said they will investigate the fatalityif and when an official complaint is received.
