At a time when we are concerned about the impact of using things once then throwing them in the landfill, a Rarotonga businesswoman has opened a new store offering more enduring floral arrangements.
Walking into Georgina Hoff’s light, airy Nikao store, decorated with the vibrant colours of “forever flowers”, one gets a peaceful happy feeling. “It’s a blessing to be able to work with artificial flowers”, she says.
Since opening last week, customers have expressed interest in her bouquets for weddings, funerals, birthdays and anniversaries. They are ideal for graveside tributes, holding their vibrant colours for months, unlike fresh flowers that will quickly wither.
But this weekend she faces her biggest challenge: for the first time today, she takes a stall at the Punanga Nui market, to sell her flowers to those seeking to show their love on Mother’s Day.
“The beauty of having forever flowers is they don’t need to be kept watered or at the right temperature and they last for a long time.”
Born on Aitutaki, Hoff spent time on Rarotonga as a child, then moved to New Zealand where she lived for many years.
There, she completed several courses in floral arrangement designs. “Everlasting flowers last longer, it’s an alternative to fresh flowers – with vibrant colours,” she explains.
The flowers are made from high-quality silk and plastic: “I offer a variety of colour and species of forever flowers that are not available on the island.”
Two years ago, she decided to return home.
“I wanted to do something here that I am passionate about, start a new business venture creating floral designs, and make a living.”
Excited, she says: “I’m happy I’m able to share my designs with people, to bring colour and vibrancy to one’s life and home. It’s a blessing”.
If you haven’t decided on a Mother’s Day gift for tomorrow, Hoff will have her flowers set up today next to the Manihiki Black Pearl Hut (under the black gazebo) at the Punanga Nui market. The small bouquets start from $5.
