A Cook Islands hip-hop dancer hit centre stage dancing in the 2020 Super Bowl LIV halftime show – beamed to 100 million viewers worldwide.

Michael Metuakore played an important part of superstar Jennifer Lopez’s dance crew last night.

Metuakore grew up in Tokoroa in New Zealand, but is a proud Cook Islander who descends from Mangaia, Rarotonga, Palmerston and Penrhyn.

When he was young, he played rugby and rugby league, but dancing was always his first love.

In 2012 he was asked by Pasifika hip-hop dancer and choreographer Parris Goebel to join her crew the Royal Family, who went on to win the World Hip-Hop Dance Championships in 2013.

Metuakore’s dreams came true when he was selected out of 700 dancers to join J-Lo’s dance crew at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

Metuakore features in author David Riley’s book Cook Islands Heroes.

Kansas City Chiefs won the 2020 Super Bowl last night, taking down the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.
