Carving new cultural links

Nineteen year old Tukiri Tini and fellow carvers from Aoteroa and Rarotonga are putting their skills on display in Avarua to hammer home the cultural links between New Zealand and the Cook Islands.

Tukiri, who is from Te Arawa, Ngaitahu and Tainui tribes is part of this weeks ‘Taurua – A Matariki Maori Art Exhibition’ running at the vacant section, also known as Avarua Park, opposite Banana Court all this week.

The official opening of the weeklong event was held yesterday where cultural links and the special relationship between New Zealand and the Cook Islands was highlighted.

The event also includes weaving demonstrations -  all part of the New Zealand High Commission initiative.
