Some thoughts on Christian marriage

Christian marriage is the perfect lifestyle model, says Bishop Tutai Pere. 17120728 Christian marriage is the perfect lifestyle model, says Bishop Tutai Pere. 17120728

“Wherefore God gave them up to uncleanness to the lust of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between their own selves: …for this cause, God gave them up unto vile affections for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature.

And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another, men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet” – Romans 1: 24 – 27.

Christian marriage, which is the ordained and sanctified relationship between a husband and wife, man and woman, male and female is the perfect model lifestyle that God foreordained for humans upon earth. Without procreation, germination, pollination, conception and reproduction, we humans would be in a race against time to fight for the survival of humankind, in the same way scientists are now desperately trying to save animal species that are at the point of almost becoming extinct.

According to the Bible, Christian marriage, as opposed to any other marriage relationship is also the perfect model. The Lord Jesus Christ metaphorically likens his church to a marriage relationship and calls her his “bride” who he one day will return to usher into his kingdom and to live with him forever.

The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 11: 2 describes it like this: “For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ”.

He further warns, “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity of Christ” (verse 3).

In my many years of experience as a pastor I have counseled many marriages. Apart from losing a loved one through death, nothing is more devastating, painful and traumatic than having to give up on one’s marriage due to repetitious abuse and grievous infidelity. This happens more to women or wives than the men or husbands, for they invariably end up taking the children and family under their motherly care in whatever the situation or circumstance might be.

And more men than women can easily walk away like at the “drop of a hat”, inconsiderate of how and what a poor mama or wife can do to take care of the poor innocent children they irresponsibly leave behind, let alone dealing with the shame, embarrassment and humiliation the family will have to face up to.

Many people live in total ignorance of where their lives will end as a consequence of the choices they make in life. Hebrews 9: 27 clearly declares: “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment”.

As the Apostle Paul in Galatians 6: 7 & 8 also states: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting”.

Yes, there is a final consummation or culmination of everything that we do in life. “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 12: 14).

In fact, a good and loving God has not left us all in darkness to trip and falter. Instead he has communicated with us since the beginning of time. Holy men and women moved and inspired by His Spirit have spoken and continue to speak to us through His Word written in Holy Scripture and ultimately through His Son Jesus Christ, the full revelation of His Godly nature, truth and righteousness, so that we shall be without excuse.

I cannot imagine or fathom the pain, hurt, fear and heartache that millions upon millions of people have endured as a result of losing spouses, sons, daughters, mums and dads to the many wars that have been fought throughout our sad human history.

Many of us have vivid memories of having seeing in pictures or movies, innocent lives being snatched away by evil men. Consider the fate of the six million Jews, old and young, who were forcibly separated from their families, loaded onto trains and taken off to the gas ovens or brutally massacred. In more recent times there have been mass killings in Yemen, Somalia, the Kremlin, Serbia and Bosnia. Those were sad and unfortunate incidents where the innocents found themselves totally powerless and totally overpowered by evil and wicked men.

Amidst all this and man’s continuous rebellion, disobedience, selfish desires and unruly state, our Almighty God Jesus Christ still reigns supreme. His ultimate will remains, that “none should perish but all come to repentance”, escape judgment and be saved in His Name.

Jesus is our only password to heaven and none other. His simple plan for our salvation set since Pentecost Sunday as found in Acts 2: 38 & 39 remains unchangeable: “Repent, and be baptised every one of you in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”

If you hear the voice of the Lord, do not harden your heart but listen and heed to his calling not just for yourself, but for your marriage, your family, your community, your nation and the whole world of humanity. The Lord Jesus Christ died for and shed his blood for the remission and forgiveness of all our sins.

God bless, protect and save our little paradise Cook Islands. Kia Ora e kia manuia rava I roto ia Iesu Mesia.
